This study investigated the refrigerant charge distribution in the compressor of a residential heat pump running with R-290 (Propane), R-1270 (Propylene) and the zeotropic mixtures Propylene - CO2 and DME - CO2. The methods applied were both numerical and experimental. The refrigerant measured in the compressor was between 32% and 46 % of the total charge in the compressor, evaporator, and condenser. The study presented a simple method to model the refrigerant quantity and distribution in a rotary compressor, both in the suction accumulator at low pressure and in the compressor shell at high pressure. Moreover, the compressor model allowed to estimate the amount of refrigerant dissolved in the oil in the accumulator and the compressor shell. The results showed that the refrigerant absorbed by the oil ranged between 44 % and 67 % of the total compressor charge. The model predicted the refrigerant charge amount in the compressor with an average error of 9 %. A global sensitivity analysis was conducted using the Standardized Regression Coefficients (SRC), Morris and Sobol. The input parameters that mainly affected the total compressor charge, were found to be the oil temperature and the oil volume.
